Want to Feel in Control of Your Finances? Calculate Your Monthly Nut

You’ll feel more empowered when you sort your expenses in these three buckets

For those in a hurry — the TLDR on today’s task:

Find out your monthly “nut.”

You may think you know what your minimum required monthly expenses are. But inflation is a thing, and your number is probably too low. Doublecheck that number, so your 2023 planning is spot on.

When it comes to money, always get accurate numbers. You can’t plot your course correctly if you don’t know your current coordinates.

For those who want the color commentary:

I have a thing about squirrels.

For one, no mammal scolds and yells more theatrically than a righteously indignant squirrel. They are the drama queens of the backyard. So much fun to watch.

For another, I fell in love with Dug, the dog in the movie Up. Whenever he sees a small mammal with a tail, he shouts “squirrel!”, loses his shit, and stops whatever he’s doing. Yelling “squirrel!” is my code for “get back on track.” That’s why I have a Victorian sandpaper drawing of a squirrel hanging in…
